To Ayu
for Guitar
"To Ayu" is a piece dedicated to my girlfriend. I think it summarizes my feelings for her quite well. On valentine's day she sent me over a keychain she had sewn and some chocolates from Japan. In return, on "White Day" I made the sketch for what was to become the solo guitar piece "To Ayu" and sent that to her in the mail (along with some Canadian chocolate) from my Toronto apartment as I was studying at University of Toronto at the time. I confess that sending a guitar serenade was perhaps a dramatic move but making music is what I do. When the piece turned out better than I expected and after talking with Ayu, I decided to release it to the public. I enlisted the help of my pro guitarist and good friend Grey Le and he helped describe some intricate aspects of guitar composition and added guitar fingerings to the guitar sheet music. He also played the piece for the music video and recordings.
I hope you enjoy
Serenade for Today
For Piano Trio
Written for the 2023 Bedford Piano Trio composition competition, Serenade for Today was about suffering. At that time, it was near the end of the Corona Virus, and the war in Ukraine started. I was contemplating if life could have been more peaceful 500 years earlier, or even 500 years later, but in the end suffering is a part of the human experience. I channeled my emotions at the time into my piece and called it “Serenade for Today”, because I believe the music will be relevant for whenever that today is.
